We are so excited to welcome Fr. David Michael to St. Faustina’s! We know many of you have questions to ask our new parochial vicar and we are all anxious to get to know him. We took the time to ask him a few questions and are happy to share a bit of his story in our newsletter.
Fr. David Michael was born in Corpus Christi, but his family moved to Houston when he was four. He grew up attending St. Paul the Apostle in Nassau Bay as the fifth child in a family of six children. Fr. David Michael loved being a part of a big family. He shared, “Honestly, I wish there had been 12 of us! I’ve learned something from each of my siblings that has made me a better person. My parents really encouraged us to make God the center of our lives, and my family’s faith helped me to realize, at a young age, that life really doesn't make sense without God and the hope of eternal happiness with Him.”
At the age of fourteen, Fr. David Michael enrolled full-time in college classes. By the age of eighteen, he had a bachelor’s degree in the Humanities (Pre-Law) from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. We asked Fr., David Michael, what it was like to attend college at such a young age. He told us, “Pretty crazy.” Sounds like this is a topic you need to ask him more about in person!
“You should choose the vocation that will make you a saint.”
These are the words Fr. David Michael heard from a priest while on a silent retreat at the age of sixteen. “I immediately felt that, although I had a real desire to get married, sainthood for me would come through the priesthood,” Fr. David Michael shared. After that retreat, Fr. David Michael began attending daily Mass and asking what God wanted for his life. During a holy hour, he experienced a moment with God that confirmed his call. Want to know more about it? Ask Fr. David Michael when you see him next!
In his “spare time”, Fr. David Michael writes songs. He’s been doing this since the age of ten. He uses his gift to help raise money for the Houston Pregnancy Help Centers through the Concert for Life. To date, he has raised over $400,000 dollars. Wondering what type of music he writes, sings, and plays? Attend this year’s Concert for Life on Thursday, August 1st at Revention Music Center.
Just like a lot of other twenty-five-year-olds, Fr. David Michael enjoys basketball, hunting, sailing, riding horses, One-wheeling, and rock climbing. He has a devotion to St. Martin de Tours and is also close to St. Padre Pio and St. John Vianney.
But, if you really want to win over Fr. David Michael, take him out for a doughnut. It’s his favorite treat.
What would Fr. David Michael like the parishioners at St. Faustina’s to know about him?
"I want the people of St. Faustina's to know that I became a priest because I love them."
