Since 2015, our Small Christian Communities have been vital to the ministry of St. Faustina. What began with around one hundred people has grown to include three hundred twenty-seven parishioners who are placed into thirty small groups. What is it that draws hundreds of parishioners to become part of these small groups?
With the help of the Holy Spirit, these groups have become more than just an opportunity for spiritual growth, but also a source of real community life. Members have shared meals and laughs together, prayed for each other and helped each other during times of difficulty and trial, and celebrated good times with one another.
There are twenty-two English speaking groups and eight Spanish speaking groups that meet weekly in homes across the city. Each meeting lasts about an hour and a half with time for prayer, discussion, and fellowship. The Small Christian Communities share a common theme for discussion that typically lasts for six weeks. During Lent, for example, the focus will be on a coming to a deeper understanding of the Mass. Together, parishioners walk towards a greater love and knowledge of our Catholic faith.
The small groups are structured for all of our parishioners no matter what stage of their faith journey they are in. Each small group has developed a safe, yet intimate environment where even the most reserved members feel they can express their thoughts and experiences of their spiritual journey.
John and Susan Jordan have been involved with Small Christian Communities since the very beginning. They are passionate about this ministry because of the fruits they have experienced in their own lives. John shared that, “Our personal spiritual lives have grown dramatically over the past 4 years. Being part of our small group has pushed us to go much deeper in our spiritual learning and this, in turn, has created a yearning to grow closer to God.”
If you’re ready to give small groups a try, watch the bulletin and parish website for details beginning at the end of January. If you’re already involved in Small Christian Communities, we encourage you to pray about becoming a group leader. We anticipate the need for new facilitators during Lent. Training and ongoing support will be provided, just bring your love of God and desire to see fellow parishioners grow in their faith.
Each Small Christian Community has truly become a family of God and we want to invite you to experience this rich fellowship. This Lent, make the decision to grow spiritually and build a deeper connection with your parish family by giving our Small Christian Communities a try!
