There is nothing else like the United States of America. Our constitution broke the mold for individual rights and a government without a royal sovereign. Pilgrims came here seeking religious freedom, and the right to free speech is a treasured liberty among the American people.
As we celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, cookouts, and time with friends, let us also remember to pray for our country. No matter what end of the political spectrum you fall on, we can always remember in prayer our nation’s leaders and look for ways to advocate for peace, justice, and our neighbors.
On this national holiday, we also have the opportunity to reflect on where true freedom lies. As Christians we know that everything good in our lives comes from the Lord - including our freedom. What a gift!
If at times we are troubled by injustices in our country and the world, brothers and sisters, rely on Christ! Without Christ there is no gratitude. Without Christ there is no justice. Without Christ there is no peace. Remember that unity is not the same as uniformity. Remember that as beautiful, meaningful, and important as our nation is, this world is not our home. We belong with our Lord in Heaven and we are only on this earth a short while. The time and place in which we live is a gift from God who is Sovereign above all.
Take great pride in where God saw fit to place you on this earth. But take even greater pride in our God who is above all nations.
